Facial toner: why use it and how to choose it

Tonico viso: perché usarlo e come sceglierlo

In most beauty routines, facial toner is skipped. It seems like an optional step, an "extra" that can be avoided. It's one of the most common skincare mistakes—and one of the main reasons why cleansing and moisturizing don't deliver the results you expect.

In this guide, we'll discover what facial toner really is, why it's essential, how to choose it based on your skin type, and how to use it correctly.

What is facial toner and what does it do?

Facial toner is a water-based product, generally in liquid form, which is applied after cleansing and before any treatment (serum, oil, cream).

Its main function is twofold:

  • Rebalance your skin's pH after cleansing. Every cleanser, even the gentlest, slightly alters your skin's pH. Skin has a naturally acidic pH (around 5.5), which protects against bacteria and maintains a healthy barrier. Without toner, your skin takes time to regain its balance—by then, cleansing has done more damage than necessary.
  • It prepares the skin to absorb subsequent products. Rebalanced skin absorbs oil and cream significantly better. Toner is, essentially, the "primer" of skincare.

Alcohol-Free Facial Toner: Why It Makes a Difference

Traditional toners, especially those formulated in the 1980s and 1990s, contained significant amounts of ethyl alcohol. Alcohol felt "deeply clean" and astringent, but in reality it dried out the skin, compromised the skin barrier, and caused irritation, especially on sensitive and mature skin.

Quality modern toners are formulated without alcohol. They hydrate, rebalance, and prime the skin without stripping it. If you're looking for a natural facial toner, make sure it doesn't contain denatured alcohol or SD alcohol among the first ingredients.

How to choose the right toner for your skin type

Dry and dehydrated skin

Look for a toner with moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera. It should leave skin feeling soft and hydrated, never tight.

Oily and combination skin

A toner with niacinamide or gentle exfoliating acids can help regulate sebum and minimize pores. Avoid those with too much glycerin, which can be sticky.

Sensitive skin

The fewer ingredients, the better. A toner with a simple formula, fragrance-free, alcohol-free, and colorant-free. Calming ingredients like chamomile extract or gotu kola are excellent allies.

Mature skin

A balancing and lightly nourishing, alcohol-free toner that prepares the skin for the anti-aging facial oil. Ingredients like peptides and antioxidant plant extracts enhance the treatment.

How to use facial toner: the correct technique

There are two main methods of applying toner, both valid:

Using a cotton pad: Pour the toner onto a cotton pad and gently pat it onto your face and neck using light strokes. This helps remove any remaining cleanser residue.

Using your hands: Pour the toner into a clean palm and press it onto your face with both hands. This is a gentler and less wasteful technique—ideal for sensitive skin.

Avoid rubbing: the toner should be patted on, not massaged in vigorously. Skin is temporarily more vulnerable after cleansing—treat it gently.

When to apply toner: before or after serum?

Toner should be applied immediately after cleansing, before any other products—serum, oil, cream. It's the second step in your routine, not the third or fourth.

Correct order: cleanser → toner → oil (or serum) → face cream.

Using it after the cream would make no sense: the cream creates a barrier that would prevent the toner from penetrating properly.
